Let me be blunt: neutrality in the conflict between Israel and Iran is not neutral. It is appeasement. It enables terrorism and emboldens a repressive regime.

We’ve seen this before. But when Hitler invaded Poland, the world didn’t equivocate — it went to war. That was a time of principled leadership. We had Churchill. We don’t have him now.

Iran was once a powerful nation — before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, it was a key Western ally under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, with a strong military, oil-driven economy and growing influence in the region.

It is now a basket case. No surprise, given its brutal theocracy and the effective pre-emptive strikes by Israel and the United States on its nuclear infrastructure. Still, chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” continue to echo from Tehran.

Israel, however, has made it clear it will not be passive. Its military has significantly degraded Iran’s proxies. Hamas, in launching its barbaric Oct. 7 attack — which saw over 1,200 Israelis killed, including civilians, and hundreds taken hostage — shattered a decades-long ceasefire that Israel had maintained, even while enduring regular rocket attacks.

The Oct. 7 massacre changed everything. In its wake, Israel responded with decisive force, not only against Hamas but also against other Iranian-backed terrorist organizations. Hezbollah miscalculated, assuming Israel would be too distracted to respond to northern provocations. Instead, the Israel Defence Forces responded with overwhelming force. The Houthis, too, learned the cost of provoking Israel and have since pulled back — somewhat.

Remarkably, a path to long-term peace in the region may be opening.

The Abraham Accords — U.S.-brokered agreements aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and Arab states — could soon grow beyond Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and the UAE. Saudi Arabia was edging closer to joining before Oct. 7. And even Syria, which Bashar al-Assad fled in December 2024, may yet move toward normalization with Israel. Recognition by these neighbours would dramatically improve prospects for peace.

So why won’t Middle Eastern nations simply leave Israel alone? They have everything to gain. Surrounded by hostile neighbours that still reject the UN’s decision to create it, Israel — the only democratic state in the region — has nevertheless flourished. Yes, issues remain: the West Bank settlements, Gaza’s future. But the international community must remember the promise of “Never again” and stand firmly with Israel.

And yet, Canada has been reluctant to do just that. After Israel’s April 2024 defensive strike on Iran — launched in response to Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile attack on Israeli territory — our government called for “de-escalation.” Protesters here carried signs glorifying Ayatollah Khamenei and demanding “Hands off Iran.” Antisemitism is on the rise — on campuses, in the streets, even in attacks on synagogues, Jewish schools and community centres. Many Canadian Jews no longer feel safe.

As a non-Jewish Canadian who served around the world during times of political and military upheaval, I hope speaking plainly might jolt some Canadians out of their complacency. Our government must choose a side. Israel needs our principled support. In this conflict, fence-sitting is not an option. Indifference only emboldens the aggressor. It is time to stand up and be counted.

Canada once stood firmly against tyranny in defence of democracy. That legacy is worth reclaiming.

  1. I do not agree with the idea of a Palestinian state. That will enable more terrorism as Palestine has no intention of sharing the area. They continue to chant ” from the river to the sea” and will only be satisfied when Israel is obliterated. The only way forward is to remove Palestinians from the area. It’s curious, isn’t it, that none of the other Arab nations want them.

    1. Don’t agree with the idea of a Palestinia State? The country belonged to them until white Europeans invaded their land. But I get coming from what Europeans did to the first nation people of Canada, why wouldn’t this general and people like you not support ethnic cleansing. The Palestinians have exposed the white Europeans hypocrisy for all of mankind to see.

      1. And nice use of Chat GPT “General”. Perhaps next time remove the extra long dashes so its not so obvious that you can’t even articulate a thought on your own. After all English is your language

  2. You want Canada to side with a genocidal apartheid entity? Surely there are better options. We are watching Israel starve 2 million people in real time; we’ve watched as they slaughtered entire families, tortured & g-raped doctors, left babies to die in incubators. Israel has attacked at least 4 countries in the last year. Iran hasn’t INITIATED any of the attacks. The Iranian people are hostages to their brutal theocratic government, the only factual part of your opinion. The world has learned what led to Oct 7; Israel’s blatant lies & behaviour before & after has forever tainted the Zionist project. & before you condemn this response as antisemitism, I stand with all Jewish people who say “Never again for anyone”, & “not in our name”.

    1. I cannot believe the ignorance of people, and the way they view Israel.Muslims terrorism is at the heart of the matter and their slaughter and rape and burning of children has escaped these morons posting on this site. They use their own people for human shields, steal the food brought into Gaza, train their children to hate the infidel and continue to work toward world domination.Which means all the morons against Israel will bow to Allah or your head goes BYE,BYE

  3. The real problem in the middle east is the US aggression, invasion and regime changes to clear the way for US corporate profiteers to plunder resources. Iran and the resistance groups seek to protect their countries from US bullying.
The white western powers are the aggressors and have no justification for interfering in other countries.

  4. Israel has been much more prone to international aggression than has Iran. It is conducting a genocide in Gaza. It has historically engaged in ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and has continually seized Palestinian land. A process which it is now extending to the West Bank and is threatening to apply in Gaza. It is a rogue and religiously bigoted state that should be heavily sanctioned by Canada and by all other countries that support democracy and that are against discrimination on a racial or ethnic basis.

  5. Joanne,
ISRAEL IS STANDING TRIAL FOR GENOCIDE AT THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE (ICJ).
NO other country will help Israelis with their despicable ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their ancestral territory!!!

Israelis refuse to share the land, live on stolen land and must eventually reconcile Palestinian land rights – ie, pay for the land taken by aggression and agree on ways of living together in peace.

    1. War is not genocide. People die as a result of war no matter the war: WWI, WWII, the war between Russia and Ukraine etc

Genocide is the deliberate murder of a specific ethnic group or religion and that is not what is happening, so spare me your false genocidal rhetoric. October 7, 2023 – that was a genocidal massacre – would you like your children to be raped, have their genitals nailed, heads cut off? Would you? And if it happened, wouldn’t you expect a military response? I don’t see you condemning what happened to the Jewish people. Maybe you need a taste of it.

  6. “Never again” means not only jailing those who commit genocide, but also those who would “stand with” those who commit genocide.

  7. The Illegality and Hypocrisy of France, Germany, Canada and the UK Threatening Recognition of Gaza/Palestine

In a stunning display of diplomatic recklessness and moral inconsistency, France, Germany, and potentially, Canada, the United Kingdom have threatened to unilaterally recognize “Palestine” or “Gaza” as an independent state. France appears ready to go first. Yet by doing so, these governments flagrantly violate established international legal standards for statehood-and expose themselves as hypocrites—undermining the very “rules-based international order” they so often invoke.

This isn’t diplomacy. It’s political theatre at best, lawlessness at worst.

  8. I will in no way support Terrorists! Canada is now governed by Elite Lunatics! As in carney! & liberals! Along with Red Liberals ! Ford! Huston! I see in the near future Civil War. Attacking or rights! Freedom of Speech! Freedom to Worship! Out of control inflation! Being the world’s piggy bank! While 🇨🇦citizens are losing everything! Enough is Enough

  9. I do not support the action to Stand with Palistine they have caused to much hate speech causing many problems to the Canadian ways. We don’t want these kind of people in our country. I want this to stop

  10. As I read all the above statements, it provides differing points of view. I think the problem was when countries wanted to give the Jewish people a homeland. Unfortunately, the people that had lived there for generations were targeted. I think the idea was not completely thought through as the Palestinian people were uprooted from their homes. I think that the solution left a lot of bitterness from the Palestinian people who were not given an option to participate in this wholesale takeover of the land. This did not come from the Jewish people but the foreign governments of the time. The Palestinian people want a place to call their own as would any people native to the land. The current Israeli government acting to the attach by the Hamas have reacted in kind by attacking Gaza. At this point, I do not see the Israeli government working with Hamas to bring home the balance of the hostages alive and deceased but work to starve the people of Gaza. It is more than just Hamas but babies, children and woman. How can a baby hurt the Israeli government? The Israeli IDF have killed journalists, aid workers, doctors, nurses – the list goes on. These are war crimes. In my mind, the government must start letting in aid for the helpless and work tirelessly to find a way to peace. I believe perhaps naively that Hamas is a result of people being pushed off their land and not way to bring attention to the problem. I feel sorry for the Israeli people who have suffered but so have the Palestinian people as well. I cannot imagine how I would feel if I saw the home and property that my family had lived on for generations being taken away from my and the property leveled and the family is forced to find another way to exist.

  11. This is one of the biggest abominations I’ve ever witnessed coming out of my Canada’s parliament! PM mark carnage is taking this nation further and further away from Gods Devine blessings and protections. I stand with Israel.
