Canadian Affairs has been nominated for the prestigious National Newspaper Award for Editorial Writing for editorials penned in the outlet’s first six months by publisher and editor Lauren Heuser.
“It is a thrill for Canadian Affairs to be recognized for its high-quality journalism so soon after launching,” said Heuser.
The judges considered Heuser’s editorials on Pierre Poilievre’s mini-documentary on Canada’s housing crisis, the federal dental-care initiative and the need to increase awareness about cannabis risks.
Judges were told editorials could be explanatory, descriptive or prescriptive. The writing could be light or serious, formal or colloquial. They were asked to consider whether the editorials helped readers identify issues of importance and understand them in new ways, whether they speak with authority and whether they would ignite public discussion.
Canadian Affairs launched on Canada Day 2023 with the goal of publishing high-quality journalism on undercovered topics relevant to the lives and livelihoods of Canadians. With this in mind, Heuser set out to write editorials that offered thoughtful, nuanced analysis on topics that matter to Canadian Affairs’ readers and that they could not find anywhere else.
Also nominated in the editorials category are Chris Hannay of The Globe and Mail for his editorials on the exploitation of temporary foreign workers and students, the diminished influence of labour unions and why the federal government needs to act quickly on AI, as well as Matt Goerzen of The Brandon Sun for editorials on Brandon’s growth on LGBTQ rights, the changes required after the deadly Carberry collision and why deficit numbers can’t always be trusted.
The National Newspaper Awards, often called Canada’s Pulitzer Prizes, were established in 1949 by the Toronto Press Club. The awards recognize journalism in 23 categories: Arts and Entertainment; Beat Reporting; Breaking News; Business; Columns; Editorial Cartooning; Editorials; Explanatory Work; Feature Photo; International; Investigations; Local Reporting; Long Feature; News Photo; Photo Story; Politics; Presentation/Design; Project of the Year; Short Feature; Special Topic; Sports; Sports Photo; and Sustained News Coverage.
Winners will be announced at a gala in Toronto on April 26.
