My name is Meagan Gillmore, and I’ve been a reporter with Canadian Affairs since October 2023.
But I’ve worked as a journalist since 2012, working for newspapers in the Yukon and New Brunswick and freelancing for publications such as the CBC, The Toronto Star and The Walrus.
While I cover a wide range of topics, I’m particularly passionate about covering topics not always prioritized in other newsrooms, including religion and disability policy.
Larger outlets often neglect religious coverage, perhaps on the assumption it’s no longer relevant to most Canadians. At Canadian Affairs, we take the opposite approach, recognizing religion can touch all facets of people’s lives.
For example, I’ve enjoyed exploring Christians’ views on the Israel-Hamas conflict or how different religious traditions impact engagement in political and civic life.
My regular reporting on Canada’s medical assistance in dying laws have also brought our readers stories they won’t find elsewhere.
I was the first reporter to cover the United Nations’ recommendation that Canada repeal parts of its MAID laws and halt further expansions to it. I was also often the first journalist to cover the Ontario chief coroner’s concerns about MAID deaths.
And it looks like people are noticing. Health Canada’s latest annual MAID report referenced my reporting on how loneliness may be influencing some people to choose MAID.
I am proud to be part of a newsroom that strives to not only inform Canadians about the news of the day, but to also help them think deeply about issues that matter to Canada’s future.
We know this work makes a difference. But we can only do it with readers’ support. We hope you’ll consider supporting us in the work we do.
