My name is Alexandra Keeler, and I’ve been a staff reporter at Canadian Affairs for just over a year. Over that time, I’ve gone from exclusively covering drugs, crime and addiction to also covering mental health, social policy and broader trends shaping Canadians’ well-being.

Above all, I love asking difficult questions, to get at the “why” of human behaviour, and to approach what isn’t working through a solutions-oriented lens.

What I’ve enjoyed most about being part of the Canadian Affairs team is the sense of purpose that comes from building something new together. As a young publication, Canadian Affairs gives every journalist a real stake in shaping the organization’s identity and future.

I also appreciate the creative freedom that comes with our mandate to cover undercovered stories. We’re not racing to break news or chase clicks; instead, we take time to go deeper — to investigate, question and understand. That freedom to prioritize substance over speed fosters more thoughtful, empathetic journalism that makes room for multiple perspectives.

Even though our newsroom is small and remote, we function as a close-knit team bound by curiosity and collaboration.

I also love that Canadian Affairs resists easy political categorization. Our reporting challenges assumptions across the board; that independence and integrity make Canadian Affairs a cool place to work.

If you value well-sourced, independent journalism that explores every side of a story, consider subscribing. Reader support enables us to keep reporting on our own terms.
