My name is Sam Forster, and I’ve been a staff reporter at Canadian Affairs since August 2024.

Before that, I spent years working as a freelance journalist covering politics, war and culture. My reporting has taken me from hockey rinks in small-town Alberta to the frontlines of Ukraine — places where you can see, in real time, how global forces shape the lives of ordinary people.

At Canadian Affairs, I focus on stories that sit at the intersection of politics, economics and national identity. I’m drawn to the big questions — how Canada defines its sovereignty, deploys its military, and responds to the pressures of a rapidly changing world.

But what matters to me most is writing stories that speak to readers beyond the Ottawa bubble. The freedom to pursue ambitious, original reporting — without the constraints of corporate media orthodoxy — is what keeps me passionate about this work.

Being part of Canadian Affairs has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I work with an editorial team that trusts reporters to chase the truth wherever it leads, and that still believes intelligent readers crave substance over clickbait.

Our mission isn’t easy. We’re a small newsroom trying to make our mark in an industry long dominated by legacy behemoths. But what we lack in size, we make up for in agility, tenacity and a firm commitment to doing journalism the right way — on our own terms.

If you value independent Canadian journalism that asks hard questions and treats readers like adults, subscribe to Canadian Affairs. Your support doesn’t just keep the lights on — it allows us to take risks, pursue truth, and report fearlessly on the issues that matter most.
